There are lots of options..
You could try what was cited above (torrent, limewire, emule, …) but most of the time it’s not legal (so you know).
You could try pay-to-download sites, but I really don’t suggest it (usually, there’re bundled with lots of DRMs and such, which means, you can’t do whatever you want with it – sometimes for instnace you can’t use them offline).
You can try sites like jamendo ( www.jamendo.com ), which offers free AND legal music (but you won’t find any artist you know there).
You can even try google! (for instance, search for : "the title I want" "the artist" "mp3" "download") – once again it’s not always legal.
The important thing in all of this is the format you choose.
You should stick to MP3 (I agree with the last post)
WAV are much heavier and thus, not very common on internet
MP4 (or M4A) are still not widely spread
WMA can be bundled with a lot of nasties (like DRMs or web links or..)
OGG is a good format, but make sure you can read it before (or download VLC – a free multimedia player)
AU is ok, but not always easy to play (I’m not sure you can play those on Windows – at least not without additional softawre)
Now for the step by step procedure :
With google, I won’t repat, just search for the file you want
With limeware, emule and such, go to their homepage (for instance, www.amule.org ) and download the programme ; then you just have to connect (a button to click) and search for your artist name and song.
With Jamendo ( www.jamendo.com ) just go there, choose some music, and download (or listen to) it.
With a pay-to-donwload site.. Send the money to a charity organisation, they will make better use of it
