what is the difference between downloading music off the internet or recording it off the radio?

I know when I was growing up we used to record music off the radio or borrow music from a friend and then record it for yourself. It didn’t seem like a problem then not until Metallica cried saying we need more millions of dollars we don’t have enough money

I agree, we used to do the same haha… but think of how many songs you can easily download online, compared to the number of songs you used to record. I mean it really wasn’t a big deal then compared to the mass downloading and easy accessibility to free (illegal) music today. You know?

songs you hear on the radio are more like an advertisement, they are official releases. the record company hopes you’ll like the song enough to buy the whole disc. copying a disc from a friend or the internet is the same thing from a legal standpoint. the "problem" from an artist view is that back in the day, if i bought a new disc, most likely just my close friends would copy it. i wouldn’t stand down at the corner yelling out for people to copy the disc for free. record companies and artist knew their stuff was being copied, but overall sales were still good. but if i were to buy a disc today, put it up on some p2p network, within hours an unlimited number of people could get to it. and thats what hurts sales. i dont care either way.

In the respect that, as a general rule, both actions are illegal, nothing

With the old tape, you could sit there for hours waiting for a favourite song to come on,then, hopefully, you could record it all before a stupid DJ talked over it.
Downloading, it’s a case of just selecting your choice and pinching it.
You could steal thousands of mp3 files while still trying to fill the old fashioned cassette
