Theology seminaries nowadays offer a wide variety of programmes and formats for scholars who are not intending to enter full-time Christian ministry. seminary education has become democratized. There are online courses of study, weekend classes, and cohort-based grades. There are new courses of study planned for pupils who will not get into traditional professions like the pastorate upon commencement ceremony. And there are other colleges and other nontraditional backgrounds that allow scholars to attend theological college without having to relocate or to change their lifestyles.
The establishment of contemporary Christian Degree
institutions was a direct result of Roman Catholic reforms of the Counter-Reformation after the Council of Trent which asserted on the improvement of the education of clergy through the creation of Seminaries as live-in establishments under the special control of elder clergy. Since at least the 4th century there have been Seminaries for the schooling of clergy.
The initial known group of Seminarians was seen by St. Basil of Ancyra. The word degenerated out of general usage in the Middle Period, when most spiritual training was in religious residencies, and after, in the universities. After Reformation and the emergence of new designations, Seminaries once more came into usage, specially in the U.S. The 16th-century Council of Trent prescribed Seminaries to be opened up in every bishopric.
