The two main causes …
The two main causes for this are:
1. that the neck is convex and requires a truss rod adjustment, and
2. that you are striking the strings at such a downward angle that they are hitting the fret board.
Try to get the strings to vibrate parallel to the fretboard. This is a SECRET TIP which will also get you a better sound

Yes, you can still learn to play it. However, you should add the fourth string so that the neck does not become twisted due to uneven tension.

This lesson is absolutely great, I had a bass collecting dust that I purchased nine years ago when I was 12, tried having someone teach me and they got frustrated so I gave up but I decided tonight to pick it back up again and your lessons make it easy for anyone to learn even someone like me who is a lefty who plays righty and has no experience musically.
